Data Science Seminar “Energy: Powering the Future with Data and AI” will take place 22 September from 16:15 at Delta auditorium 1037.
As more electricity comes from renewable sources such as wind and solar, electricity production becomes increasingly dependent on weather conditions. At the same time, electricity demand is rising due to the electrification of transport, heating and industrial processes, as well as the growing energy needs of digital technologies such as AI and data centres. In parallel, electricity markets are evolving, enabling a wider range of actors, from large utility companies to owners and operators of smaller flexible assets such as batteries, solar installations and distributed generators, to actively participate in supplying, consuming and trading electricity.
Together, these developments make the electricity systems more dynamic and introduce new sources of uncertainty. Supply varies with weather, demand fluctuates with new usage patterns, and prices respond to changes in both. How does this increasing complexity affect the way electricity systems must be operated to remain reliable and affordable? How can different actors better understand, predict and manage these dynamics? What are the key open problems, and which skills are needed to address them?
This seminar explores how data science and artificial intelligence are transforming electricity systems through probabilistic forecasting, digital twins, virtual power plants, automated electricity trading and dynamic line ratings, linking fundamental ideas with real-world applications and future directions.
